What is
Orton-Gillingham?
Orton-Gillingham is an evidence-based one-on-one instructional approach for learners with dyslexia and other reading disabilities and difficulties. OG is a direct, explicit, multi-sensory, structured, sequential, diagnostic, and prescriptive way to teach reading, writing, and spelling. OG is most commonly described as an approach or philosophy, rather than a program, method, or curriculum.
The Philosophy
-
Direct - one-on-one teacher led instruction
-
Explicit - clear, direct, and unambiguous explanations and demonstrations
-
Multi-sensory - teaching with visual, auditory, tactile, and kinesthetic strategies to increase learning and retention
-
Structured - teaching skills directly, step-by-step and broken down into the simplest terms
-
Sequential - teaching language skills in an orderly progression, moving from simple to complex. Check out the scope and sequence I follow here
-
Diagnostic - using assessments to find students’ strengths, weaknesses, and misconceptions before, during, and after instruction
-
Prescriptive - tailoring instruction to meet students needs
